Maison Montres provides a watch authentication service that reviews a specific watch, its components and the records supplied. The output is a dated, evidence-bounded opinion. It is not a manufacturer certificate.
Maison Montres defines the inputs, inspection steps, output and exclusions before work starts. The report separates what was observed from what was stated, inferred or not examined.
What is needed to authenticate a watch?
The starting file should include clear photographs, the stated maker and reference, visible serial or case identifiers, the current configuration, box and papers, service records, repair invoices and any acquisition or prior-sale records available.
Physical access may be required to examine dimensions, engravings, construction, movement, dial, hands, case, bezel, crown, crystal, bracelet or strap. Opening a watch is not automatic. It is performed only when appropriate, authorised and included in the scope.
Missing records do not by themselves prove a watch is inauthentic. They reduce what can be concluded and must appear as a limitation.

What should an authentication report say?
The report identifies the watch and the stated reference. It lists every material input received and procedure completed. Relevant observations are linked to photographs or records where those form part of the scope.
Findings use clear status language: observed, consistent, inconsistent, not verified or not examined. A component can be consistent with the maker yet still be a later service replacement. The report should say when originality or production-period fit cannot be established.
The conclusion answers the agreed question at the report date. It also records open questions, excluded work and any specialist or manufacturer confirmation still needed.
What authentication does not establish.
A remote review is preliminary unless the report expressly says otherwise. A report is not a manufacturer-issued extract, service confirmation or certificate. It does not guarantee water resistance, mechanical performance or the future reliability of seals and components.
Authentication does not prove legal ownership, lawful import, tax status, absence from every loss database or an unbroken chain of provenance. Those questions require separate evidence and may require legal, compliance, insurer, manufacturer or law-enforcement input.
Databases and archives differ in access, completeness and authority. The report names any source actually used. It does not imply access to a private manufacturer database or state that a search was completed when it was not.
Independent review is not brand certification.
Maison Montres applies a strict source boundary: Rolex states that only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch. Its Certified Pre-Owned process is a manufacturer-backed route for eligible watches sold through participating official retailers. An independent report must not be described as that certification.
A loss-database search is also narrower than a title or provenance opinion. The Watch Register explains that a search is checked against the records held in its database and is subject to its search terms. The report should name the database, search date and result without claiming that every possible record was checked.

Authentication addresses identity and component evidence. A valuation addresses a current market estimate. An appraisal is a purpose-specific written report whose acceptability must be confirmed with the intended recipient.
Buyers can connect the findings to a pre-purchase review for an identified watch or a sourcing brief when the watch is not yet known. Collection owners can keep the report, images and unresolved questions with the watch in the free collection register, then manage the wider holding through collection management. What is a watch authentication service?
A watch authentication service examines a specific watch and its records to assess whether its identity and components are consistent with the stated maker, reference and production period. It is an evidence-based opinion, not a manufacturer certificate or a promise about future discoveries.
Can a watch be authenticated from photographs?
Maison Montres reviews photographs first to identify missing evidence, visible discrepancies or the need for specialist inspection. Photographs normally cannot establish every material fact. Movement, case interior, measurements or records may require physical access under an agreed scope.
Does an authentication report guarantee that a watch is genuine?
No. A report states the evidence examined, findings reached, work not performed and limits that apply at the report date. It cannot guarantee undisclosed history, later component changes, future manufacturer findings or facts that could not reasonably be examined.
What does the written authentication report include?
The report identifies the watch and stated reference, lists the inputs received and procedures completed, records relevant observations and discrepancies, explains the conclusion and states exclusions or unresolved questions. Photographs or specialist findings are included only when they form part of the agreed work.
Does authentication prove ownership or provenance?
No. Authentication concerns the watch and evidence examined. Ownership, lawful title, sanctions, theft records and full provenance are separate checks. If any of those matters is within scope, the engagement must name the sources used and the limits of the search.
