United States Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches and jewellery with a combined manufacturer's-suggested retail value running into the billions of dollars each year, and the better replicas now carry cloned movements, etched rehaut serials, and convincing weight. A casual glance no longer settles the question. A documented protocol does — and that is what this guide sets out, point by point.
This page is written to be read by a collector holding a watch and asking a single question: is it real? We answer it the way we answer it in the Geneva atelier — not with one trick, but with the twelve-point authentication protocol we run on every Rolex, each point cross-checked against archive records and signed off by a named watchmaker. We describe what a counterfeit shows and what the authentic reference shows, so the difference is legible. We do not, and will not, explain how counterfeits are produced; the purpose here is detection, and only detection. No single tell is conclusive — authenticity is established across the whole watch. The advice that circulates online — "a real Rolex has a smooth second hand," "hold it to the light and read the rehaut," "check the weight" — was useful fifteen years ago. It is now incomplete to the point of being dangerous. The replica market has bifurcated. At the bottom sits cheap costume jewellery that fails on sight. At the top sits a category of so-called "super-clones" built around cloned movements, laser-etched rehaut serials, correctly magnified cyclops lenses, and weights tuned to approximate the genuine figure. A watch in that upper category will pass any one popular tell, and sometimes several.
That is the whole reason a serious answer is structural rather than anecdotal. A counterfeit may reproduce the dial convincingly and fail at the movement; reproduce the movement and fail at the rehaut; nail the rehaut and fall short on case-back machining. The probability that a fake reproduces all twelve points correctly, and survives an archive cross-check on top, is vanishingly small. What the counterfeit shows. Engraving between the lugs and on the case-back is the first place a fake gives itself away under magnification. Counterfeits commonly show shallow, ragged, or acid-etched lettering with inconsistent depth, soft serif terminals, and uneven baselines. Case-back thickness and the machining of the threads frequently run too thin or too coarse, because the replica is built to a price rather than to a tolerance.
What the authentic shows. Genuine Rolex engraving is cut crisply and to a consistent depth, with sharp character edges that hold under a loupe. The case-back — a sealed Oyster back on almost every reference, not a display back — sits to a documented thickness, and the thread machining is clean and precise. "The first thing I do is run a loupe along the lug engraving and the case-back edge," notes our senior watchmaker. "A fake that has spent everything on the dial often forgets that the case is a machined object with tolerances, and the case-back is where carelessness shows."
What the counterfeit shows. The dial is the hardest surface to fake well, because Rolex printing is held to a standard that is difficult to reproduce at scale. Counterfeit dials tend to show printing that is blurred, thickened, or unevenly spaced — coronet proportions slightly wrong, the gap between the minute track and the text inconsistent. Luminous plots are a frequent giveaway: uneven sizing, a colour cast that reads too green or too yellow, an applied-index outline that is rough or that pools at the edges.
What the authentic shows. A genuine dial holds clean, evenly weighted printing with correct kerning, sharply defined applied indices, and luminous material laid uniformly to a consistent height. The Chromalight emission on modern references is a long-lasting blue; the tone and plot geometry are consistent across the dial. "Lume is where the eye and the loupe agree," our watchmaker observes. "If one plot is fatter than its neighbour, or the blue is the wrong blue, I have learned to distrust everything else on the dial until proven otherwise."
What the counterfeit shows. The cyclops lens over the date is a classic stumbling point: many counterfeits magnify weakly, so the date fills only part of the bubble or sits visibly off-centre. The laser-etched rehaut — the inner bezel ring carrying a repeating "ROLEXROLEX" serial and a coronet, introduced across the range in the mid-2000s — is harder still. Fakes render it coarsely, with uneven character spacing, a coronet that is malformed, or a serial that does not match the one between the lugs.
What the authentic shows. On a genuine modern Rolex the cyclops magnifies the date approximately 2.5 times, filling the bubble cleanly, and the rehaut engraving is fine, evenly spaced, and laser-etched to a consistent depth, with the serial reading correctly and matching the case serial. The coronet at six o'clock on the rehaut is crisp. These two features together defeat a large share of mid-tier replicas, though the better super-clones now reproduce them — which is precisely why this is point three of twelve, not the conclusion.
What the counterfeit shows. Opening the case is where most fakes are settled. Counterfeits run cloned or imported automatic movements dressed to resemble a Rolex calibre. The bridge geometry is wrong, the screw slots are burred, perlage and Côtes finishing are absent or printed rather than cut, and the rotor and balance assembly do not match the reference specification. Engraving on the movement, where present, is shallow and irregular.
What the authentic shows. A genuine Rolex movement — a 31xx, 32xx, or the relevant in-house calibre for the reference — shows the correct bridge layout, the documented free-sprung Microstella or balance arrangement, clean industrial finishing, and engraving cut to specification. The whole assembly is photographed and verified against the reference. "A dial fools the eye; a movement fools no one who has opened a few hundred of them," our watchmaker says. This step is decisive enough that we never issue a conclusion on a watch we have not opened.
What the counterfeit shows. Numbers are the trap a counterfeit cannot easily escape. Fakes reuse a small pool of cloned serials, so the same serial appears on many watches; or they pair a serial with a reference that was never produced in that combination; or the serial format belongs to the wrong production period for the dial and bracelet generation present. A serial that decodes to a year inconsistent with the rest of the watch is a hard flag.

The tells are wrong fonts and kerning on the guarantee card, incorrect card stock or finish, security elements that are cloned or simply absent, a card serial that does not match the watch, and booklets printed for the wrong period or reference. A "full set" assembled to flatter a fake watch is a recurring pattern.

Genuine documentation is period-correct in stock, print, and security features, with the card serial matching the watch and the booklets corresponding to the reference and year. We verify papers for correctness but treat them as corroborating evidence, never as proof on their own — a genuine watch can lose its papers, and a fake watch can be sold with convincing ones. Papers strengthen the file; the watch itself decides the verdict.
What the counterfeit shows. The bracelet is a forging-intensive component and a reliable separator. Counterfeits show hollow or thin links, loose tolerances and rattle, a clasp that closes weakly or imprecisely, end-pieces that fit the case poorly with visible gaps, and engraving on the clasp and inner links that is shallow or wrongly coded. The Glidelock or Easylink extension systems, where they should be present, are often crudely imitated or omitted.
What the authentic shows. A genuine Rolex bracelet is substantial and precisely machined, with solid links, tight articulation, a clasp that engages with a positive, engineered action, and end-pieces that meet the case cleanly. Reference codes on the clasp and end-links are correctly cut and consistent with the watch. The extension mechanisms operate exactly as specified. We measure end-link fit and clasp generation against the expected tolerances, the same as in our standard twelve-point protocol.
What the counterfeit shows. Weight is one of the oldest checks for a reason: solid metal is heavy, and cutting cost cuts mass. Counterfeits built from lighter alloys, plated base metal, or hollow links characteristically weigh under the genuine figure, and a watch that feels conspicuously light for its size invites scrutiny. The caveat is that better super-clones now add ballast to approximate the target, so a correct weight no longer proves anything by itself.

What the counterfeit shows. The Oyster case is sold on its seal, and counterfeits routinely cannot honour the rating printed on the dial. Fakes commonly fail a pressure test outright, leak around the crown or case-back, or were never tested by the seller at all. A "300m" claim on a watch that cannot hold a dry-pressure cycle is a contradiction the test exposes immediately.
What the authentic shows. A genuine Rolex with intact seals passes a dry-air pressure test to its rated depth, the crown screws down with a clean engagement, and the case-back seats correctly. Where the rating is relevant we test in the atelier and log the result. We are careful to separate a failed test caused by a missed service interval — a maintenance matter on a genuine watch — from a case that was never engineered to seal, which is an authenticity finding. The test is read alongside the case and movement evidence, not in isolation.
What the counterfeit shows. Material substitution is the economy at the heart of most counterfeits. Fakes plate base metal to imitate gold or steel, use a softer non-904L alloy that will not hold finish or colour, and replace a solid ceramic Cerachrom bezel with painted, printed, or aluminium imitations that scratch, fade, or show the wrong gloss. Claimed solid-gold cases that test as plate are among the clearest material flags.
What the authentic shows. A genuine Rolex uses solid Oystersteel, solid 18-carat gold to Rolex's own foundry standard, or platinum, with a fired ceramic Cerachrom bezel on the references that carry one — colour-stable, scratch-resistant, and correctly toned. Where the value of the watch warrants it we confirm material composition by X-ray fluorescence rather than by eye, which settles the gold-versus-plate and ceramic-versus-paint questions definitively. Materials analysis is one of the few points where an instrument, not judgement, gives the answer.
What the counterfeit shows. A fake never reaches this stage. If any of the preceding eleven points fail, the watch is recorded as not authentic, the specific points that flagged are documented in writing, and no certificate is issued. The Submariner is the single most-counterfeited Rolex, and the tells cluster on the bezel and dial. On fakes, the unidirectional bezel often turns with the wrong number of clicks or without the precise, even action of the genuine 120-click ratchet, and the Cerachrom insert is imitated in painted aluminium that shows the wrong gloss and fades. The "Mercedes" hour hand is a frequent giveaway: counterfeit lume in the three-spoke crown is uneven, and the hand proportions sit slightly wrong against the indices. Genuine modern Submariners (124060, 126610LN, 126610LV, 126613) hold a maxi-dial layout with uniform plots, a correctly magnified date on the date models, and a bracelet with the Glidelock extension engineered to specification. Vintage 5513 and 16610 references demand two-tier specialist review, because the value sits in dial originality and case geometry that mid-tier fakes and over-restored genuine watches both distort.
The Daytona is the reference where the movement settles the matter fastest. The genuine chronograph runs the in-house calibre 4130 (and, on current production, the 4131), and counterfeits substitute a cloned automatic or a mismatched chronograph that the bridge layout and pusher action expose on opening. On the dial, sub-dial alignment, the spacing of the tachymeter scale on the bezel, and the crispness of the printing are where fakes drift. Genuine ceramic-bezel Daytonas (116500LN, 126500LN) show a flawless Cerachrom bezel and pump or screw-down pushers that engage cleanly. Precious-metal and "Le Mans" 126529 / 126525LN editions carry value in materials and provenance, so material analysis and archive verification weigh heavily; vintage Paul Newman-dial references are auction-grade and always pass two-tier review.
The GMT-Master's signature is the two-colour ceramic bezel — "Pepsi," "Batman," "Sprite," "root beer" — and reproducing a crisp, evenly toned bi-colour Cerachrom insert is genuinely difficult. Counterfeit inserts show a muddy colour boundary, the wrong red or blue, or an aluminium imitation. The independent 24-hour hand and the local-hour jump function are a second front: fakes frequently get the hand stack, the GMT-hand colour, or the quickset behaviour wrong. Genuine references (126710BLRO, 126710BLNR, 126720VTNR) carry the calibre 3285, a precisely machined Jubilee or Oyster bracelet, and a rehaut serial matching the case. Vintage 1675 with a tritium dial and original Pepsi bezel is a two-tier-mandatory piece.
Because the Datejust is produced in enormous variety, it is a favourite of counterfeiters who assemble plausible-looking but non-existent configurations — a dial, bezel, and bracelet combination Rolex never offered together. The fluted bezel is a common weak point: genuine fluting is sharply and evenly cut, while fakes show shallow or irregular flutes. The cyclops and date alignment, the jubilee or oyster bracelet construction, and the fineness of the applied indices separate genuine from fake. Two-tone and solid-gold Datejusts add a materials dimension, since plated imitations of gold and gold-capped components are common; this is where X-ray fluorescence earns its place. Serial-to-reference coherence is decisive on the Datejust given the breadth of legitimate variants.
The Day-Date ("President") is made only in solid gold or platinum, which makes material the first and often decisive test: a Day-Date that reads as plated or as a non-precious alloy under analysis is settled before any other point. The day display at twelve o'clock is the dedicated tell — genuine examples render the day wheel cleanly in the correct typeface and the correct languages for the reference, while fakes misprint or misalign it. The President bracelet, with its semi-circular three-piece links and concealed Crownclasp, is hard to forge convincingly; counterfeits show hollow links and a weak clasp. Genuine modern references (228238, 228206, 128238) run the calibre 3255. Given the values involved, every Day-Date passes archive verification and, where warranted, two-tier specialist review.

Superlative Chronometer is Rolex's in-house certification, marked on the dial as "Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified." Since 2015 it guarantees the assembled watch to -2/+2 seconds per day, beyond the COSC chronometer standard the movement passes first, and carries a five-year guarantee. The certification is verified at the movement and timing stages of authentication: a genuine reference holds the rate band on a six-position timegrapher, while many counterfeits print the wording on the dial but cannot meet the timing tolerance.
Weight is a useful corroborating check, not a standalone test. Authentic Rolex cases and bracelets are machined from solid 904L (Oystersteel), solid gold, or platinum, giving each reference a characteristic, documented weight; for example a full steel Submariner sits in a known band that a collector can compare against.
