A Voutilainen is a watch defined by hand-finishing of an order rarely attempted at production scale — anglage on every visible bridge edge, bevels polished by hand, inner-corner finishing executed at the level Lange-school finishers practise piece by piece, dial work executed at Comblémine (the dial workshop Voutilainen owns and operates separately). The Vingt-8 has, over the past decade, become the workshop's reference piece. Production is small. Demand has consistently exceeded supply for the better part of a decade.

Vingt-8. The workshop's reference piece. Hand-wound, classical case proportions (38–39mm), in-house movement architecture, hand-finished bridges. Available across white gold, rose gold, yellow gold, platinum, and the limited dial-variant editions. The Vingt-8 has become the reference for what contemporary independent watchmaking can be when the focus is finishing rather than complication.
Observatoire. The chronometer reference — based on the regulator architecture Voutilainen demonstrated for the 2007 Observatoire de Neuchâtel competition. Limited production, hand-finished movement, distinctive dial work.
28SC. The small-seconds variant — classical proportions, simpler dial, executed at the Vingt-8 finishing standard.
217QRS. The perpetual calendar with retrograde seconds — Voutilainen's most ambitious complication piece. Very small production.
Comblémine dial collaborations. Voutilainen's Comblémine dial workshop (in Môtiers, separate from the watchmaking atelier) produces dials for Voutilainen pieces and for outside collaborations (most notably for Rexhep Rexhepi and other independent makers). Original Comblémine dials on Voutilainen pieces are a key valuation factor.
1. Brief. Open a sourcing brief specifying the reference (Vingt-8, Observatoire, 28SC, 217QRS), case material (white gold, rose gold, yellow gold, platinum), dial variant (Comblémine specification preferred — original dial colour, guilloché pattern, indexes, hand profile), edition number where applicable, and budget range. The more specific the brief, the more efficient the search.
2. Search. The Voutilainen workshop in Môtiers controls allocation directly — for collectors with the right profile we work the workshop relationship for new allocation when it becomes available, though this is rare. The practical sourcing route is the private collector network across Geneva and Dubai, and Paris, plus auction calendars (Phillips Geneva above all) where the right reference is on consignment.
3. Authentication. Every Voutilainen passes our twelve-point intake protocol in Geneva, signed by a named watchmaker. Two-tier authentication with an independent specialist is standard on early production (pre-2010 Vingt-8 and Observatoire), Comblémine dial collaborations, and any reference where dial work has been altered.
4. Settlement. Inspection window on every transaction. Documentation transfers with the watch — original papers, presentation packaging, the timing certificate from the workshop, Comblémine dial provenance where applicable, and the full Maison Montres dossier.
Voutilainen has, over twenty-five years, established the reference standard for what hand-finishing in serial production can achieve. The Vingt-8 finishing — the chamfering of every visible edge, the polishing of every screw-head, the consistent execution of inner corners on the bridges — is work that other ateliers attempt at higher cost and lower volume. Voutilainen executes it in series, at the production scale of approximately fifty pieces per year.
The dial work, executed at Comblémine, is equally consequential. Voutilainen is one of the very few independent watchmakers to own and operate a dedicated dial workshop, and the Comblémine work — guilloché, enamel, the various dial finishes — is a substantial part of why Voutilainen pieces command the valuations they do on the secondary market. Original Comblémine dials with documented provenance from the Môtiers workshop are a critical valuation factor.
