Inventory and decision routing

Inherited watch collection: inventory first, decisions second.

Maison Montres helps an owner or adviser team organise the watch-specific evidence in an inherited collection before value, insurance, service, transfer or sale decisions are made. The first output is a controlled inventory and an open-question map.

This service does not decide ownership, probate, tax or distribution. Those questions stay with qualified advisers in the relevant jurisdiction and the person authorised to instruct the work.

— Fit

Use this service for the first watch-specific map.

Good fit: there are several watches, records and accessories are scattered, condition or service history is unclear, or an adviser team needs one structured file before deciding what specialist work comes next.

Not a fit: there is a dispute about legal entitlement, a tax or probate conclusion is required, one watch only needs physical inspection, or the authorised owner has already decided to sell and needs sale execution. Those are separate legal, tax, authentication or collection-sale scopes.

— Process

Move from boxes and stories to a controlled record.

01

Authority

Record who may instruct the watch work and which adviser owns legal and tax questions.

02

Inventory

Give each watch a controlled ID and record maker, model, reference, location and current custody.

03

Connect

Match boxes, papers, receipts, photographs, service records and family accounts to each record.

04

Triage

Mark known facts, reported facts and gaps; route only material questions to suitable specialists.

05

Decide

Build an authorised keep, insure, value, service, transfer or sell action for each watch.

— Practical checklist

Preserve the evidence before changing the object.

ControlActionReason
IdentityCreate one record per watch; photograph dial, case, bracelet or strap and available markings without publishing full serials.Prevents watches and documents from being mixed.
AccessoriesKeep each box, paper set, receipt, service record and spare component linked to its watch.Preserves the evidence trail for later review.
ConditionRecord the watch as received before cleaning, polishing, service or part replacement.Maintains a dated baseline for a specialist.
ControlUse a location code and record the person or service provider with physical custody.Makes handoffs visible without putting private addresses in the working file.
Open questionsLabel each point documented, reported or unresolved and name the next responsible person.Stops a family account from becoming an unsupported provenance claim.
— Decision routing

Define the purpose before ordering the next report.

An insurance file, estate report, internal family decision and planned sale do not necessarily use the same value basis or specialist. Record who will rely on the result, why it is needed, the effective date and the required format before commissioning work.

Use watch valuation for a defined market estimate and watch appraisal when a named recipient requires a purpose-specific report. A physical identity or condition question belongs in a separate inspection scope.

If the authorised owner decides to keep the collection, move the stable records into ongoing collection management. If the decision is to sell, create a separate whole or partial collection-sale plan.

— Method and evidence

Record guidance supports the file, not the legal conclusion.

The Maison Montres Watch Collection Register and Stewardship Toolkit separates identity, ownership records, condition, location, service, value purpose, insurance status and decision rights. It is a working structure, not proof of title or authority.

Chubb's consumer guidance recommends a detailed inventory with descriptions, current photographs, purchase records and appraisal certificates. Jewelers Mutual also advises owners to retain ownership and maintenance records. These sources support useful record categories; they do not set universal policy, probate or tax requirements.

— Responsibilities and limits

Watch work stays inside the authorised adviser structure.

Maison Montres organises the watch file, labels evidence status, records gaps and routes watch-specific questions. The authorised client or adviser confirms instructions, access and decisions. External specialists remain responsible for their own opinions and reports.

Maison Montres does not determine legal ownership, authority, probate, tax, equitable distribution or beneficiary rights. It does not promise that an insurer, court, tax authority or other recipient will accept a report. The relevant recipient and qualified advisers must confirm their requirements.

Share only the information needed for initial scope. Keep full serials, personal data, exact storage locations and legal documents in the owner's approved secure system.

— Inherited collection questions

Start with facts, then route the decision.

Five answers for heirs, owners and adviser teams.

What is the first step with an inherited watch collection?

Start with a controlled inventory before cleaning, servicing, separating accessories or choosing a sale route. Give each watch a record ID, take dated photographs, record its current location and connect the box, papers, receipts and service documents that are already available.

Can Maison Montres decide legal ownership or inheritance tax?

No. Legal authority, ownership, probate, tax and distribution questions belong with qualified advisers in the relevant jurisdiction. Maison Montres can organise the watch-specific record and open questions for the person or adviser team authorised to instruct the work.

Does every inherited watch need an immediate valuation?

Not always. First define why a value is needed, who will rely on it, the effective date and the required value basis. Insurance, estate reporting, internal planning and an expected sale result can require different evidence, methods and specialists.

Should inherited watches be cleaned or serviced before review?

Preserve and photograph the watches as received, then record condition and accessories before an intervention. Cleaning, polishing, part replacement or service can change physical evidence, originality and value, so the authorised owner should obtain appropriate specialist advice first.

Can Maison Montres sell an inherited watch collection?

The initial inherited-collection review is not a sale mandate. It builds the inventory and decision map. If the authorised owner later chooses to sell all or part of the collection, sale scope, role, channel, fees, custody and settlement should be confirmed separately in writing.

— Start with the inventory

Describe what exists and what is still unknown.

Send an approximate watch count, the current state of the records, the authorised working contact and the first decision the collection must support. Share only the minimum needed for initial scope.
